Bows & Labels

Make your own cute little ribbons and labels to top your mini edible gifts. You can use rolled fondant, also known as sugarpaste, Mexican Modelling Paste, or Sugar Florist Paste.

Click on the link below for the instructions.

You can colour the sugarpaste using paste food colouring. Add a small amount at a time and knead the paste to distribute the colour.

You can make these as far in advance as you like, keep them in an airtight container until you're ready to use them.

What you need

200g White Sugarpaste/MMP/SFP

Edible Glue or Vodka

Small Paint Brush

Straws, cut into short 2-3cm pieces

Edible food pens

Edible glitter

Small rolling pin

Icing sugar, for dusting your surface

Sharp Knife

Bows

Method

  • Lightly dust a clean work surface with sifted icing sugar
  • Roll out the fondant, about 2-3mm thick
  • Cut long 20cm x 1cm strips with a sharp blade
  • Following the diagram & photos below, fold the sugarpaste into loops to create the bow, using vodka or edible glue to stick the overlapping pieces together
  • Use the straws to keep the loops open
  • Brush the top of the loops with edible glue or vodka and sprinkle with edible glitter
  • Allow to dry before sticking to your mini cakes

Labels

Method

  • Lightly dust a clean work surface with sifted icing sugar
  • Roll out the fondant, about 2-3mm thick
  • Cut out shapes of labels with a sharp blade, about 2cm x 3cm (as seen in the photos below)
  • Use a straw to make a small hole in each tag at the point where you would tie it to something
  • Leave to dry flat or drape over a piece of straw so that is dries with a bend in it
  • Once dry, write your Christmas greetings on each label using edible food colour pens

Other Tips

These will keep for months if kept in an airtight container in a dry and cool place so if you have any leftover you can use them to top cupcakes or other baked treats

Keep excess fondant wrapped in clingfilm while you work so that it doesn't start to dry and form a crust
